This is the place to find out about the amazing sequence of events that happened near here on Dec 24, 1949.

An attack in the middle of the night that didn't go according to plan, changing the course of history: Guningtou Battle.

On December 24, 1949, the Guningtou Battle marked Kinmen as the front line in the long-term standoff between the Communist Party in China and KMT in Taiwan. When the routine shelling on both sides of the Strait finally ended in 1979, the military established this museum to commemorate the historic battle.

    Museum on Battle of Kinmen

    4 2018-11

Museum commemorates the battle of Guningtou (aka battle of Kinmen) where the communists were defeated by KMT in 1949. Due to its sensitive nature, mainland tour groups seldom visit this place. Museum is interesting with exhibits and paintings depicting the battle. A tunnel leads to lookout points.

    A very famous battle

The Guningtou battle is probably the most important battle (the first big victory) between KMT Taiwan and China PRC in recent history. After taking over the mainland China in July, 1949, in October, China launched two hundreds some boats to invade Kinmen and landing Guningtou to hopefully, take over Kinmen, then Taiwan. However, Taiwan KMT’s Kinmen military exercise got delayed and luckily caught the unexpected assault. Moreover, all the boats got stranded due to tide difference. Thus PRC communist could not send more troops to land Kinmen. All of the communist troops got killed or surrendered. This victory really boosted Taiwan KMT military morale big time. Actually, it may totally changed the whole ball game to let Taiwan survive. The museum has a lot of photos and weapons to display. It’s only 6000 M to Xiamen, China. A must visit spot if you ever come to Kinmen.

some good paintings about the conflict

Guningtou Battle Museum had few dozen impressive paintings that outlined some of the famous battles that took place in the Beishan area of the island. The English descriptions here were excellent and were informative for those who may not be familiar with the conflict with Communist China.

Took a bus out to see this monument but was expecting something better than I saw. There were a few nice tributes and monuments but overall I felt that it was a poor tribute and needed some more informative and eye-catching displays.
